Detroit's Belle Isle is located in the Detroit river just north of the downtown area.
On August 18, 1904 The Belle Isle Aquarium, which opened adjacent to the new horticultural building on Belle Isle at a cost of $160,000, would quickly become, "one of the most popular attractions on the Island."
Until it closed, in May of this year, the Belle Isle Aquarium stood for over 100 years as the oldest existing aquarium in the United States.
My family and I made several trips to Belle Isle before the Aquarium closed and I present this photographic essay of this now bygone institution.
